For Parents & Families

Supporting LGBT kids - Akron Children's Hospital named this one of the top 10 kids' health issues to watch in 2011.  See their director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine provide advice to parents on supporting their LGBT teen in the video, "Parenting a gay or lesbian teen."

New research has established a clear link between accepting family attitudes and
behaviors towards their LGBT children and significantly decreased risk and better overall health in adulthood. Specific parental/caregiver behaviors -- such as advocating for their children when they are mistreated because of their LGBT identity or supporting their gender expression -- protect against depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in early adulthood.  Read a synopsis of the study's major findings, or see the entire article published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing.
